Opposition to the Bill of Rights

The Federalist Papers (specifically Federalist No. 84) are notable for their opposition to what later became the United States Bill of Rights. The .

However, Hamilton’s opposition to a Bill of Rights was far from universal. Robert Yates, writing under the pseudonym Brutus, articulated this view point in the so-called Anti-Federalist No. 84, asserting that a government unrestrained by such a bill could easily devolve into tyranny. References in The Federalist and in the ratification debates warn of demagogues of the variety who through divisive appeals would aim at tyranny. The Federalist begins and ends with this issue. In the final paper Hamilton offers a lesson of moderation to all sincere lovers of the Union, and ought to put them on their guard against hazarding anarchy, civil war, a perpetual alienation of the States from each other, and perhaps the military despotism of a successful demagogue. The matter was further clarified by the Ninth Amendment.

    The Dixie divide

The sweet spot for academic improvement on the PSAT seemed to be class days that hovered around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the study.

By contrast, every time a student experienced at least six school days above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, it reduced their yearly learning or how much an average student would be expected to improve academically in a single year by 1 percent. And these deficits appear to compound over time students who had experienced hot school days two, three and four years prior to taking a PSAT had substantially lower scores.

Those temperature trends carved out a North-South divide on the U.S. map.

If you affect kids in this early stage of their life when they’re building this knowledge base, that’s going to have very long run implications on human capital, Frances Moore, environmental economist and climate scientist. Photo by Caiaimage/Sam Edwards/via Getty Images

Hotter Southern counties like in Florida and Texas showed lower test scores than counties in the North, even after controlling for other socioeconomic factors like family income, county economic status or local pollution.

This geographical divide in school test scores has long been known. Researchers have blamed it on resource disparities and public-versus-private educational approaches dating back to the Civil War. But this study shows heat plays a role, too, and further affects groups who are already contending with systemic disadvantages.

The causal effect of any given 90-degree day was much larger for lower-income students and racial minorities, Park said. And we know that those types of students are more likely to live in the South or in hotter parts of the country.

Weight Watchers App Focuses on Food Restrictions for K

Last month, Weight Watchers, now called WW, doubled down on their campaign to promote weight loss in teenagers, announcing a new dietary tracking app for children ages 8 17 years old.

The new app Kurbo which is based on Stanford University’s pediatric obesity program, last year. The app uses what is called the Traffic Light Approach which, according to Allure, categorizes foods as either red (processed, sugar-laden foods like candy and soda), yellow (lean protein and pasta), and green (veggies and fruits). It’s also specifically for kids.

Last February, WW was heavily scrutinized over creating a free weight loss program specifically for teenagers, which many felt placed too much emphasis on dieting and weight loss for young teens.

The launch of Kurbo is reigniting a firestorm of criticism.

    How the app works

Children as young as eight-years-old can download the fun to use Kurbo app to their smartphone for free. Children thirteen and older do not need parental approval. When they sign up, they enter their name, height, weight and gender. Then they choose a goal and rank them by significance. Goal options listed on Kurbo are, eat healthier, lose weight, make parents happy, get stronger and fitter, have more energy, boost my confidence or feel better in my clothes.

The child’s profile page charts their body mass index (BMI), a formula based on their weight and height. Then, these adolescent members track their daily food intake in Kurbo’s free app based on the traffic light system of either green (good), red (bad), or yellow (in moderation).

For $69 a month, the child can get a digital coach to accompany the free app, which is strongly encouraged. The adolescent user can watch success stories like eleven-year-old Emilie, who dropped 25 pounds in five months.

    Origins

The Federal Convention sent the proposed Constitution to the Confederation Congress, which in turn submitted it to the states for ratification at the end of September 1787. On September 27, 1787, Cato first appeared in the New York press criticizing the proposition; Brutus followed on October 18, 1787. These and other articles and public letters critical of the new Constitution would eventually become known as the Anti-Federalist Papers. In response, Alexander Hamilton dec

Hamilton recruited collaborators for the project. He enlisted John Jay, who after four strong essays (Federalist Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5), fell ill and contributed only one more essay, Federalist No. 64, to the series. Jay also distilled his case into a pamphlet in the spring of 1788 An Address to the People of the State of New-York ; Hamilton cited it approvingly in Federalist No. 85. James Madison, present in New York as a Virginia delegate to the Confederation Congress, was recruited by Hamilton and Jay and became Hamilton’s primary collaborator. Gouverneur Morris and William Duer were also cons > Duer later wrote in support of the three Federalist authors under the name Philo-Publius, or Friend of Publius.

Alexander Hamilton chose the pseudonymous name Publius. While many other pieces representing both s >inches ‘Publius’ was a cut over ‘Caesar’ or perhaps ‘Brutus’ and even ‘Cato’. Publius Valerius helped found the ancient republic of Rome. His even more famous brand, Publicola, meant ‘friend with the people’. It was not the first time Hamilton acquired used this pseudonym: in 1778, he had applied that to three letters attacking other Federalist Samuel Chase and revealing that Chase had taken good thing about knowledge obtained in Our elected representatives to try to dominate the flour market.
